Rebecca Stevens is a pediatric nurse practitioner in the Brain Injury Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. She’s worked at Boston Children’s for almost seven years.

What’s your job at Boston Children’s?

As a nurse practitioner in the neurology clinic, I mostly see patients who have sustained a concussion or brain injury. I help with managing their ongoing symptoms and navigating their return to school and physical activity. I also act as a clinical care coordinator in the Multidisciplinary Concussion Clinic.

What do you love most about your job?

I love being part of a clinic that provides a patient-centered experience for our families. We provide a one-day evaluation with a team of concussion specialists. Our providers create a plan of care for each individual patient. They don’t have to take off as much time to accommodate appointments and it helps them coordinate their care. We’re usually able to provide several interventions that help patients improve.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

The hardest part of my job is not being able to provide an intervention that will give immediate relief for patients with post-concussion symptoms. There are a lot of things we can use to help patients with their symptoms, but it often it takes a little time. This can be frustrating for patients and families.

Tell us something surprising about yourself.

I have a bearded dragon lizard. They are surprisingly nice and relaxing pets.

What do you love to do outside of work?

I love to read! I also enjoy finding New England adventures with my 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter.

What’s your favorite movie?

I love the Harry Potter movies (but I do think the books are better).

If you could have any other job, what would it be?

If I did not go into nursing, my plan was to study elementary education. Since I was young, I thought that being an oceanographer would be pretty neat.
