Staff Spotlight: Meet Dr. Bartley Cilento, Jr.

Pediatric urologist Bartley Cilento, Jr., MD, MPH, is co-director of the Kidney Stone Program at Boston Children’s Hospital, which cares for children and adolescents who have or are at risk for developing kidney stones. He also serves as director of the hospital’s Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program.

What does your job involve? 

My job involves treating all the disorders and conditions associated with the genitourinary system: the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and reproductive system.

Why did you choose to work at Boston Children’s? 

Easy question — it’s the best children’s hospital in the world. The hospital leadership, doctors, and nurses work in concert to provide the best care to all our patients. It’s such source of pride to be member of the team.

What’s the hardest part of your job? 

Delivering less than expected news to parents and patients. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence.  

What’s one of your favorite memories from working with families? 

Spontaneous hugs from grateful patients!

Tell us something about you that might surprise us. 

I wish I were an accomplished musician, like a pianist or guitarist. 

What three words would you use to describe your job? 

Rewarding, stimulating, satisfying

What did you want to be when you grew up? 

A doctor. My father, who was a pediatrician, provided an excellent role model.

What music is on your phone right now? 

Classic rock is my favorite, but I like many other genres, too. I have very eclectic collection of music, including classical, jazz, Motown, Big Band, and country.

You’ve got a day off. What are you doing? 

Depending on the day, I might be spending time with family, gardening and landscaping, golfing, skiing, biking, or doing home renovations.
